Everything you need to know about Alkaline Water

Alkaline Bottled Water: Myth or Reality?

To understand how alkaline bottled water works, we must first understand that the human body is designed in such a way that the fluids in it, including blood, have a pH value of 7 or close to 7. A pH less than 7 is said to be acidic while a pH above 7 is alkaline. Our body’s normal pH value is 7. Keeping this in mind, it is only natural to think that good old plain drinking water is good enough for the human body. So why all the hype about alkaline bottled water?

Several years ago, there were various theories about the goodness of alkaline bottled water and how it did wonders for the body by making the pH level of the body slightly alkaline. While there were many prominent figures in the medical field who argued for the cause, there was an equal number who claimed that this was just another money-making racket.

The Argument for Alkaline Bottled Water

Those who supports the use of alkaline bottled water had several points that, they claimed, were backed by science. Alkaline water is said to make the blood and other body fluids slightly more alkaline. They claim that several diseases – including cancer, cannot thrive in a body that is slightly on the alkaline side. Alkaline water, in addition to hydrating the cells of the body also makes the body alkaline and prevents diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer and arthritis among many others. Acidic water makes the body tired, lethargic and sleepy. But a drink that is alkaline can change that by making the body’s pH level come up.

The ideas against Alkaline Bottled Water

Those who are against alkaline water have an equally strong opposition. They argue that the body is naturally built to function at a pH of 7 and no matter what one does, the body will regulate in such a way that the fluids will always be close to a pH of 7. According to this group, selling alkaline distilled water is nothing but just another money-making racket.

Can alkaline bottled water be made at home? It seems a terrible waste to buy alkaline distilled water from the store, when it can be made in your own kitchen. Here’s how one can make alkaline bottled water. Fill a bottle with distilled water. Allow enough room in the bottle to allow for shaking. Add in about a quarter teaspoon of baking soda to the water, replace the lid of the bottle and give it a good shake. Check the pH level of the water now. You want to aim at getting your water to around a pH of 9. If it is not alkaline enough, add a bit more baking powder and check again.

Another way to make your alkaline bottled water is by adding alkaline drops or tablets to normal water. These drops/pills are available off the counter. You can also pick them up at a health store near you. But be sure that they can be used in drinking water.

Whether alkaline water is good for you or not is something you have to decide. If it works for you, go ahead and use it. It’s not going to harm you in any way. The truth is alkaline bottled water can be good for you.
